Tandem Paragliding over the Rugged Lava Fields at Blue Mountains
Glide silently above Iceland's volcanic landscape with expert instructors and panoramic views in every direction.
Tandem paragliding in Reykjavík offers one of the most dramatic aerial perspectives in Iceland, lifting passengers over ancient lava fields, geothermal terrain, and snow-capped peaks without the need for any prior experience. Operated by licensed instructor pilots from the Reykjavík Free Flying Club, this flight is as accessible as it is unforgettable. You simply take a few steps, leave the ground behind, and let the rising air carry you silently over one of the world's most distinctive landscapes.
The paraglider uses no motor, relying entirely on natural thermals and ridge lift to stay aloft. This means the experience is quiet and immersive, offering uninterrupted views across the Atlantic Ocean, the Reykjavík city skyline, and the dramatic volcanic interior that defines Iceland's terrain. Airtime typically runs between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on conditions on the day.
Transport to and from central Reykjavík is available as a pick-up option, and the total outing — including preparation, safety checks, and the flight itself — takes two to three hours. Instructors handle all technical aspects of the flight, so passengers can focus entirely on what is happening around and below them.
The launch site sits at Blafjallavegur (Road 417), off Sudurlandsvegur (Road 1), near the Blue Mountains — a location chosen specifically for its reliable flying conditions and sweeping, unobstructed views across the greater Reykjavík area and surrounding wilderness.

How the Experience Unfolds
If the pick-up option is selected, transport departs from central Reykjavík 30 minutes before your scheduled time. The drive takes you out through the lava field landscape toward the Blue Mountains launch site.
On arrival at Blafjallavegur (Road 417), your instructor pilot conducts a pre-flight briefing covering the basic movements and what to expect during the flight. No experience is needed to understand the process.
All harness fittings and safety equipment are checked by the instructor before launch. Passengers are required to wear sturdy shoes and outdoor clothing appropriate to current weather.
The paraglider inflates, a short run-up brings you to the edge, and within a few steps you are airborne. The flight typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes, drifting silently over lava fields and geothermal ground with the ocean and city visible in the distance.
After a controlled landing, there is time to review any GoPro footage if the extra was booked. Return transport to central Reykjavík is provided for those who arranged the pick-up option.
