Monte Brasil Walking Tour: Volcanic Peaks, Historic Fortress and Island Flavours
Step onto an extinct volcano above the Atlantic and walk through centuries of Azorean history.
The Monte Brasil Walking Tour takes you across an extinct volcanic cone that rises directly from the sea beside Angra do Heroismo, offering commanding views of the city, the harbour and the open Atlantic at every turn. Covering three hours on foot, the route combines natural spectacle with layered military and cultural heritage in a single manageable half-day outing.
Monte Brasil is classified as a Natural Forest Reserve, sheltering a dense canopy of laurel, juniper and cedar that keeps the trails cool even in summer. The volcano's distinctive silhouette, formed by a central caldera encircled by four distinct peaks, is visible from virtually everywhere in Angra and has defined the skyline of this UNESCO World Heritage city for centuries.
The tour is guided throughout, moving at a pace suited to walkers of moderate fitness. Along the way your guide provides context on the geology of the Azores archipelago, the strategic military role the headland played from the 16th century onward, and the everyday traditions that still shape life on Terceira Island today.
By the time you descend back toward the marina, you will have covered terrain that few visitors explore on their own, visited spaces that are easy to overlook without local knowledge, and earned a genuine appreciation of why Monte Brasil is considered one of the most rewarding short walks in the Azores.
Tour Highlights
Panoramic views from four volcanic peaks: Pico das Cruzinhas, Pico do Facho, Pico da Quebrada and Zimbroico do Pico.

Tour Itinerary
The group assembles at the marina below Monte Brasil, where your guide introduces the volcanic geography of the headland and outlines the route ahead. From the waterfront the scale of the caldera rim is already impressive.
The trail enters the Natural Forest Reserve and climbs through native woodland, passing the first viewpoints over the bay of Angra. Your guide explains the ecological importance of the reserve and the plant communities unique to the Macaronesian laurel forest zone.
The route traverses all four peaks of the volcanic caldera rim: Pico das Cruzinhas, Pico do Facho, Pico da Quebrada and Zimbroico do Pico. Each summit offers a distinct angle over the island, the harbour and the open Atlantic.
Near the end of the loop, the group enters the Fortress of Sao Joao Baptista, a UNESCO-listed fortification begun in the 16th century. The guided visit covers the interior courtyard, the original dungeons cut into the basalt rock, and the fortress church.
On the descent, an optional stop at the military museum set inside the former military hospital provides context on Portugal's armed forces across three centuries. Exhibits represent the army, navy and air force through artefacts and period displays.
Back at the foot of the hill, the walk concludes with a tasting of Dona Amelia, a honey-and-spice pastry that has been produced in Angra do Heroismo since the 19th century. It is one of the most emblematic food souvenirs of Terceira Island.
