Canyoning Ribeira dos Caldeiroes Half-Day Adventure with Transport
Descend waterfalls, leap into pools, and slide through volcanic gorges on Sao Miguel Island.
This half-day canyoning Ribeira dos Caldeiroes experience takes you deep into one of Sao Miguel's most dramatic natural corridors, combining rappelling, jumping, and natural slides in a protected landscape park.
The journey begins with a scenic 40-minute drive northeast from Ponta Delgada, passing through the rare commercial tea plantations that make this part of the Azores uniquely distinctive in a European context. Upon arrival at Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeiroes, guides distribute equipment and lead participants on a 20-minute trail walk to the canyon entry point.
Inside the gorge, the terrain alternates between technical rappel descents, natural water slides, and short hiking sections linking each obstacle. The largest waterfall reaches 8 metres, offering a genuine vertical challenge without requiring prior climbing or canyoning experience.

What to Expect
The group meets at the Picos de Aventura office and boards transport heading northeast along the coast road toward the Ribeira dos Caldeiroes area.

On arrival at the park, guides fit participants with wetsuits, helmets, and harnesses. A 20-minute walk leads to the canyon entry point where the safety briefing takes place.
The canyoning route features a series of rappels, water slides, and jumps through the volcanic gorge. The largest single rappel is 8 metres over an active waterfall.
