Falljökull Glacier Hike — 3-Hour Easy Adventure in Skaftafell
Step onto ancient ice and discover the raw, frozen heart of Iceland's highest mountain range.
This Skaftafell glacier hike takes you onto Falljökull, a sweeping tongue of ice that descends from Hvannadalshnjúkur, Iceland's highest peak. Suitable for all fitness levels, the tour combines hands-on glacier techniques with breathtaking scenery drawn straight from cinematic landscapes. A certified guide leads the way, ensuring every step is both safe and memorable.
Falljökull has earned international recognition, having served as a filming location for productions including Game of Thrones and the film Oblivion. Walking across its surface reveals millennia of compressed ice, with oxygen bubbles locked inside glacial blocks that glow an otherworldly blue. The glacier's visual drama is matched only by the profound silence of the surrounding wilderness.
From the icecap, on a clear day, visitors can see the vast glacier sand expanses stretching toward the horizon, widely considered among the largest of their kind on the planet. A glacier moulin — a vertical shaft bored straight through the ice — offers a rare and striking glimpse into the glacier's interior. These geological features make Falljökull one of the most compelling natural classrooms in Europe.
The tour begins at the Troll Expeditions meeting point in Hof, where a shuttle bus transfers the group directly to the glacier tongue in roughly ten minutes. All technical equipment is provided on-site, and a brief practice session on level ground ensures every participant feels confident before setting foot on the ice.

Tour Itinerary
Arrive at the designated meeting point in Hof, where your guide will greet the group, distribute equipment, and provide an overview of the day's route. Car parking is available at the meeting point.
Board the Troll Expeditions shuttle bus for a ten-minute drive to the base of Falljökull glacier. The transfer brings the group to the edge of the glacier tongue, where the hike begins.
Before stepping onto the ice, the guide conducts a hands-on training session covering crampon use, rope work, and safe movement techniques. This preparation takes place on flat, accessible ground.
Ascend onto the glacier surface and explore its landscape of crevasses, ice formations, and moulins. The guide provides continuous commentary on the glacier's geology, history, and ongoing changes.
At a suitable vantage point on the glacier, the group pauses to take in panoramic views of Hvannadalshnjúkur and the surrounding glacial sand plains. On clear days, the visibility stretches for considerable distances.
The guide leads the group safely back down the glacier tongue to the shuttle transfer point. The bus returns everyone to the Hof meeting point to conclude the tour.
