Ribeira Funda and Praia da Viola Full-Day Walking Tour
A 5.5 km trail through dense forest, ancient watermills, and a secluded black-sand beach on São Miguel Island
The Ribeira Funda hiking trail is one of São Miguel's most rewarding full-day walks, guiding visitors from lush inland valleys to the rugged coastline of Praia da Viola. The route unfolds across varied terrain, moving from open countryside into a corridor of dense Atlantic vegetation before emerging at a dramatic clifftop viewpoint.
Along the trail, walkers pass a series of centuries-old watermills once used to grind wheat and maize into flour for local bread-making. These stone structures stand as quiet reminders of rural Azorean life, tucked beside the streams that still flow through the valley today.
The journey ends at Praia da Viola, a sheltered and rarely crowded beach framed by cliffs fed by natural freshwater springs. The return journey to Ponta Delgada includes a stop at the Gorreana tea plantation, the oldest working tea factory in Europe, offering a genuine taste of Azorean agricultural heritage.
