Sete Cidades Full-Day Walking Tour with Lunch
Walk the rim of a volcanic crater, between ocean views and legendary twin lagoons.
The Sete Cidades walking tour takes you deep into one of the Azores' most iconic volcanic landscapes, tracing the crater rim on foot with a local guide and stopping for a well-earned lunch overlooking the caldera. This is a seven-hour journey through living geology, lush Atlantic vegetation, and sweeping coastal panoramas. It suits walkers who want more than a viewpoint — those who want to feel the island beneath their boots.
The route begins near an old aqueduct, a quiet remnant of another era, before climbing steadily to the crater rim. From the top, the view opens across the volcanic depression, revealing the twin blue and green lagoons and the small parish of Sete Cidades nestled within the caldera walls.
The trail continues along a ridge between the Atlantic Ocean and the lagoon, reaching the Miradouro da Rainha — Queen's Viewpoint — where lunch is served with a panorama that few dining rooms can rival. The descent into the village brings walkers to the edge of the blue lagoon for a final rest before returning to Ponta Delgada.

Itinerary
The group meets in Ponta Delgada and travels to the trailhead. At the entrance, an old aqueduct marks the beginning of the route and offers a first glimpse into the island's historical past.
The trail begins with a demanding uphill section to the crater rim. Reaching the top rewards walkers with a sweeping view across the volcanic caldera, the twin lagoons, and the parish of Sete Cidades below.
The path follows the ridge with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the caldera lagoon on the other. This segment combines dramatic coastal scenery with the vivid colours of the blue and green lagoons.
The group stops at the Queen's Viewpoint for lunch. From here, the interior of the crater unfolds from a distinct angle, offering a different perspective from the rim walk earlier in the day.
Continuing along the trail, walkers can see the westernmost edge of São Miguel and the rocky Mosteiros islets rising from the sea. This section marks the turnaround before the descent begins.
The trail descends into the village of Sete Cidades, where walkers take a break at the shore of the blue lagoon. After this rest, the group returns to Ponta Delgada.
