Full Day Terceira Island Tour: Volcanoes, Villages and Coastline
A complete circuit of Terceira, from volcanic craters to historic parishes and natural lava pools.
This full day Terceira Island tour takes small groups on a guided circuit covering the island's most significant natural, cultural and geological landmarks. Departing from the Marina de Angra, the route spans Monte Brasil, the eastern coast, the central plateau and the volcanic interior before finishing at the renowned natural pools of Biscoitos.
Terceira is one of the most varied islands in the Azores archipelago, offering a rare combination of UNESCO World Heritage urban fabric, active volcanic features and traditional wine-producing landscapes — all within a single day of travel. The itinerary is designed to move at a measured pace, allowing time at each stop without feeling rushed.
A local guide and driver accompanies the group throughout, providing context on the island's geology, history and living traditions. Lunch is served at a local restaurant, offering a genuine taste of Terceirense cuisine mid-way through the day.
Tour Highlights
Descend into the Algar do Carvão, one of the few publicly accessible volcanic tubes in the world, formed by ancient lava flow activity.
Take in the celebrated patchwork landscape known as the "Manta de Retalhos" from the panoramic viewpoint at Serra do Cume.
Visit the parishes of Porto Judeu and São Sebastião, where some of the island's oldest churches and Império structures stand preserved.
Explore Monte Brasil, a protected natural park overlooking the bays and the historic city of Angra do Heroísmo at the start of the tour.
End the day at the Biscoitos natural lava pools, a bathing area shaped entirely by past volcanic activity along the northern coastline.
Pass through the Furnas do Enxofre, a geothermal zone in the island's interior where sulphurous fumaroles remain visibly active.
Enjoy a sit-down lunch at a local restaurant, included in the tour, featuring traditional Azorean flavours representative of the island.
Itinerary
The tour begins at the Monte Brasil natural park, a volcanic headland offering panoramic views over Angra do Heroísmo bay and the surrounding coastline. The park is home to native wildlife and a popular leisure area used by local families.
Travelling east along the coast, the group visits two historically significant parishes, each preserving notable examples of Azorean religious architecture, including one of the island's oldest churches and a traditional Império built in honour of the Holy Spirit.
A stop in Praia da Vitória, the island's second city, allows free time to walk the seafront and explore the town centre. The visit continues to the Serra do Facho viewpoint, which looks out across the entire city and its bay.
Before the midday break, the group reaches Serra do Cume, where the island's distinctive divided landscape — a mosaic of green fields divided by dark stone walls — unfolds in every direction. Lunch follows at a local restaurant included in the programme.
The afternoon is dedicated to the volcanic interior, beginning with the Algar do Carvão lava tube, a rare and accessible geological formation open to visitors. The nearby Furnas do Enxofre provide an additional encounter with the island's ongoing geothermal activity.
The final stop is the parish of Biscoitos, known for its centuries-old vine cultivation on volcanic soil and its dramatic natural lava pools. The pools represent one of the most distinctive bathing environments in the Azores, formed by ancient volcanic flows reaching the sea.
