Salto do Cabrito Canyoning — Full Day with Transport from Ponta Delgada
Rappel down volcanic cascades through one of the Azores' most dramatic canyons
This full-day canyoning Salto do Cabrito experience takes participants from Ponta Delgada across the narrowest stretch of São Miguel Island to a technically demanding canyon carved by centuries of volcanic activity. Transport from the meeting point is included, making this a seamless adventure from start to finish.
The route follows the Ribeira Grande canyon system on the north coast of São Miguel, passing through lush, layered vegetation and alongside a historic hydroelectric plant that speaks to the island's engineering past. The terrain alternates between active walking sections and vertical obstacles, keeping the pace varied and the scenery constantly changing.
Three waterfall descents mark the technical core of the experience, with the tallest cascade reaching 15 metres. Rappelling technique is explained and supervised throughout, making this suitable for participants with a spirit for challenge rather than prior canyoning experience.

How the Day Unfolds
The group gathers at the meeting point in Ponta Delgada for an initial briefing. Equipment is checked and transport departs toward Ribeira Grande on the north side of the island.
The drive takes you along the narrowest transversal route on São Miguel, offering panoramic views of both coastlines as you ascend through the island's volcanic interior.
On arrival, all canyoning gear is distributed and fitted. A 15-minute guided walk leads the group to the canyon entry point, where a safety and technique briefing takes place.
The main activity involves navigating three vertical waterfall obstacles using rappel technique. Walking sections between descents allow time to take in the gorge environment and the old hydroelectric infrastructure.
After completing the canyon, the group returns to the transport for the drive back to the meeting point in Ponta Delgada, concluding the full-day experience.
