Fálkaklettur Via Ferrata at Falcon Rock, Reykjavik
Scale the iron path above the sea with sweeping views of Reykjavik and the North Atlantic coast.
The Fálkaklettur Via Ferrata at Falcon Rock offers an accessible yet genuinely challenging guided climb along secured steel cables on the dramatic cliffs of Mount Esja, just outside Reykjavik. Guided by experienced instructors and equipped with all necessary safety gear, participants complete a route that rewards effort with panoramic views across Faxaflói Bay toward the Icelandic capital.
Via ferrata, meaning iron path in Italian, has its roots in the European Alps and is now practiced on every continent. The system of fixed steel cables, iron rungs and anchors allows climbers of varying experience levels to ascend routes that would otherwise require advanced technical skills. Fálkaklettur is one of the few via ferrata routes in Iceland, making this tour a rare opportunity in the country.
The tour departs from the Mount Esja parking lot and follows a structured route up Falcon Rock, with an instructor guiding the group throughout. All safety equipment is provided as part of the tour, so participants need only arrive with appropriate clothing and a sense of adventure. The season runs from April through October, taking advantage of Iceland's extended daylight and milder temperatures.
Conditions on the route can be windy and cool even in summer, so layering and windproof outerwear are strongly recommended. The route is rated challenging, meaning participants should be reasonably fit and comfortable at height. Those who complete the climb consistently describe it as one of the more memorable physical experiences available near Reykjavik.

Participants are fitted with harnesses, helmets and via ferrata lanyards from the rental inventory. Instructors demonstrate correct clipping technique and explain how to move safely along the steel cable system.
The group hikes from the parking area to the base of Fálkaklettur, the route's starting point. Instructors provide an overview of the rock face and outline key sections of the climb ahead.
Participants clip into the fixed steel cables and ascend Falcon Rock under instructor supervision. The route includes a mix of iron rungs, natural rock holds and exposed traverses with ocean views opening progressively.
At the high point of the route, the group pauses to take in unobstructed views across Faxaflói Bay toward Reykjavik. This is the recommended moment for a short rest and snacks before the descent.
