Ribeira da Barca: Boat Trip to the Cave, Snorkeling and BBQ on the Beach
A full day of volcanic coastlines, hidden sea caves, and fresh barbecue on a black-sand beach in Santiago Island.
This Cape Verde snorkeling and boat tour takes you from the capital Praia to the rugged western shores of Santiago Island, where volcanic rock formations, crystal-clear cave pools, and warm Atlantic waters combine for an unforgettable day out.
The journey begins with a scenic drive across the island, passing through the historic market town of Assomada for a photo stop before descending to the tranquil bay of Ribeira da Barca. From there, a traditional fishing boat carries you along a coastline shaped by ancient volcanic forces.
At Pilon de Achada Leite, you will encounter one of Cape Verde's seven natural wonders: a dramatic cluster of rare rock formations teeming with small crabs and coastal wildlife. The slow pace of the boat ride gives you ample time to take in the raw geology of the island's western edge.
The highlight of the day is a visit to Aguas Belas, meaning beautiful waters, where sea caves carved into the volcanic cliffs invite swimmers and snorkelers to explore the marine life within. While you discover the underwater world, the crew sets up a barbecue on the black-sand beach, and the afternoon unfolds at a relaxed pace before the return drive to Praia.
