Arouca 516 Suspension Bridge and Paiva Walkways Tour
Cross one of the longest suspension bridges in the world and hike the breathtaking Paiva river canyon.
The Arouca 516 Suspension Bridge stretches 516 metres across a dramatic canyon above the Paiva river, making it one of the most remarkable pedestrian crossings in the world. This full-day tour from Porto combines the bridge crossing with an 8-kilometre hike along the iconic Paiva Walkways, offering an unforgettable outdoor experience in northern Portugal.
The journey begins with a convenient pick-up from your accommodation in central Porto, heading east into the Arouca Geopark, a UNESCO-recognised territory celebrated for its geological heritage and natural scenery. A brief stop in Arouca town gives travellers a first taste of the region, including a visit to a local bakery where traditional sweets can be sampled.
Once at the trailhead, the group crosses the suspension bridge before descending to the Paiva Walkways, a series of wooden boardwalks that follow the river through dense forest and sculpted rock formations. The pace is relaxed and the route is suitable for most active adults, though sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended.
After the hike, the group travels by road to the village of Alvarenga for a seated lunch featuring Arouquesa beef, a local breed renowned throughout Portugal. The return drive to Porto takes approximately 90 minutes, with drop-off at the original pick-up point.
