4-Day Carpathian Trek: Bucegi Mountains and Piatra Craiului National Park
Two wild mountain ranges, one unforgettable journey through the heart of Romania's Carpathians
This Carpathian trekking adventure carries the official Eco-Romania certification, developed in partnership with Green Cross Romania and co-funded by the Environmental Partnership Foundation. Over four days, trekkers move through the rugged northern slopes of the Bucegi Mountains and the dramatic ridgelines of Piatra Craiului National Park.
Starting and ending in Brasov, the route passes through authentic mountain villages, ancient sheep farming landscapes, and narrow limestone gorges. Daily walking distances range from five to eight hours, with terrain that transitions from moderate valley paths to a challenging summit ascent reaching 2,238 metres.
Accommodation for all three nights is at the same local guesthouse in the Bran area, providing a consistent and comfortable base. Home-cooked dinners and breakfasts reflect the regional culinary tradition, adding a genuine cultural dimension to the physical experience.
Between June and September, the itinerary includes a stop at a working sheep farm for a traditional midday meal on the first trekking day. This element of the programme connects participants directly to mountain pastoral life that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

Itinerary
Departing from Brasov, the group heads to the Bran village area to begin a five-to-six hour hike through the less-frequented northern flank of the Bucegi Mountains. The route covers approximately 14 kilometres with 800 metres of both ascent and descent. Between June and September, a stop is made at a working sheep farm for a traditional lunch.
The second trekking day focuses on the lower reaches of Piatra Craiului National Park. The route crosses authentic mountain villages sitting at the base of the massif before entering the Zarnesti Gorges. The walk is rated easy to moderate, making it a rewarding contrast to the more demanding days on either side.
Subject to weather conditions and the fitness level of the group, this day targets the highest point of Piatra Craiului National Park at 2,238 metres. The ascent and descent each involve 1,200 metres of elevation change, placing this stage in the difficult category. An alternative hike is offered for those who prefer a less strenuous option.
The programme concludes with a return journey to Brasov, where the tour began. Participants depart with three nights of mountain accommodation and three full trekking days completed across two of Romania's most celebrated natural parks.
