Itinerary
The tour departs from Brasov and heads toward Rupea, approximately one hour by road through the Transylvanian countryside. The route passes through rolling hills and traditional Saxon villages.
Arrive at Rupea Fortress, perched on a basalt rock and featuring three concentric defensive rings dating to the 14th century. Inside the fortress complex, a 60-meter deep well still holds drinkable water, a remarkable feat of medieval engineering.
Drive approximately 20 minutes to the village of Racos, first documented in 1421. Visit the Sükoesd-Bethlen Castle, constructed in 1624 on land granted by Transylvanian Prince Gabriel Bethlen, featuring corner towers and an interior courtyard that served both defensive and residential purposes over its long history.
A short five-minute drive leads to the Racos Geological Complex and the Brazi Quarry, where basalt extraction once dominated the landscape. After mining stopped, groundwater filled the quarry to create the Emerald Lake, named for its vivid green coloration.
Continue to the Basalt Columns, a protected geological site where columnar jointing produced striking hexagonal rock formations. The nearby Extinct Volcano can be viewed from above, offering perspective on the youngest volcanic structure in the Carpathian range.
