Transylvania Village Walking Tour
Rambling in Transylvania: A Walk Between an Empire and a Kingdom
Follow ancient border trails through the remote villages of Ciocanu and Sirnea, where Austro-Hungarian history meets authentic Romanian mountain life.
This Transylvania village hiking tour takes walkers along the former frontier of two great powers, through landscapes that have remained largely unchanged since the end of World War One. Departing from Brasov, the route winds through rolling hills above the Piatra Craiului foothills, offering panoramic views across some of Romania's most celebrated natural parks.
The village of Ciocanu, founded according to local tradition by three deserting Austro-Hungarian soldiers, sits quietly at the edge of history. Its name means Hammer, a reference to the outline its paths and buildings trace across the hillside. Today the village is home mainly to elderly residents who continue to raise cattle and sheep much as their predecessors did a century ago.
Sirnea, recognized as the first officially designated tourist village in Romania, serves as the starting point for the day's walk. From there, the trail moves through open pastureland and forested ridgelines, giving walkers a genuine sense of the terrain that once marked the boundary between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Romanian Kingdom.
A licensed guide accompanies the group throughout, sharing the documented history of the border settlements alongside the folk legends that still circulate among local communities. The hike covers 10 to 12 kilometres on paths graded easy to moderate, making it suitable for reasonably fit adults with standard walking footwear.

Itinerary
The day begins with approximately one hour of road transfer from Brasov to Sirnea. This officially recognized first tourist village of Romania serves as the trailhead and provides an introduction to the character of the Transylvanian countryside.
The walk sets out from Sirnea along paths that rise gradually into the foothills of Piatra Craiului. The guide begins introducing the historical context of the former Austro-Hungarian and Romanian border that once ran through this landscape.
The route reaches the remote village of Ciocanu, one of the most dispersed settlements in Romania. Walkers explore the area on foot, hearing the account of its founding by three deserting soldiers and learning about the quiet life that continues here among its largely elderly population.
The trail crosses open rolling terrain with wide views stretching across Bucegi Natural Park, Piatra Craiului National Park, and the Postavarul Massif. The guide shares local myths and legends connected to the landscape and its communities.
After completing 10 to 12 kilometres of walking, the group gathers at a local guesthouse for a sit-down lunch. The meal features regional specialties including sheep and cattle cheeses, pork sausages or lard, home-grown vegetables, and home-made preserves.
Following lunch, the group returns by road to Brasov, concluding the full day out in Transylvania's lesser-known highland countryside.
