Akureyri Classic Whales in the Midnight Sun
Sail into Eyjafjord under the eternal summer glow and meet humpback whales where the sun never sets.
This midnight sun whale watching tour from Akureyri takes you deep into Eyjafjord, Iceland's longest glacial fjord, aboard a high-speed, specially modified vessel designed for unobstructed wildlife viewing. Available from 15 June to 14 August, it offers a rare opportunity to observe humpback whales, minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, and harbour porpoises under continuous daylight. Expert marine biologists accompany every departure to enrich your understanding of the marine environment.
Eyjafjord is one of Iceland's most productive whale habitats, and the so-called Eyjafjord Humpback Whales are regulars here throughout the summer months. Their dramatic breaches and tail slaps are a highlight, but the fjord's rich birdlife and the sweeping panorama of volcanic mountains and coastal villages make every moment on the water rewarding.
The tour runs in the late evening hours when the midnight sun bathes the fjord in warm, golden light, creating photographic conditions that daytime tours simply cannot match. Because whales do not fully sleep, sighting rates remain consistent regardless of the hour, giving you the same genuine chance of an encounter as any other departure.
On board, a heated indoor saloon with panoramic windows provides a comfortable retreat, while open viewing platforms let you feel the crisp Arctic air. Complimentary overalls are available to keep you warm, and the onboard bar offers refreshments throughout the voyage.

How the Tour Unfolds
Arrive at the ticket office at the harbour at least 15 minutes before departure. Staff will issue your boarding pass and direct you to the floating pier where the whale watching ship is docked.
The crew guides passengers aboard and helps everyone get comfortable. Choose between the heated indoor saloon with panoramic windows or the open viewing platforms, and pick up a complimentary overall if heading outside.
The vessel heads north into the fjord under the glow of the Midnight Sun, passing the island of Hrísey and small towns along the shore. A marine biologist begins commentary on the fjord's ecosystem and the species you may encounter.
The crew searches for humpback whales, minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, and harbour porpoises in their natural habitat. Onboard naturalists explain the animals' behaviour and identify individual whales where possible.
After approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours on the water, the ship heads back to the home base. Guests can remain on deck for views of the fjord or relax indoors with a drink from the bar.
Crew assist passengers off the vessel at the floating pier. From here, the town centre of Akureyri is within easy reach for those continuing their evening.
