Esmeralda — Private Whale and Dolphin Watching in Madeira
An intimate journey on the Atlantic for you and your loved ones
Aboard the private yacht Esmeralda, small groups of up to five guests set out from Calheta to encounter the wild cetaceans that inhabit Madeira's rich Atlantic waters. Guided by an on-land spotter and two dedicated crew members, this is one of the most personal ways to experience the island's marine life.
The coastline around Calheta offers a striking perspective on Madeira's volcanic origins, and travelling close to shore reveals geological formations and sea cliffs that are invisible from the land. The yacht's low deck places guests within touching distance of the ocean surface, making every sighting feel immediate and unfiltered.
When conditions allow, the crew guides guests to secluded snorkeling spots accessible only by water. Swimming in these locations, surrounded by clear Atlantic waters and dramatic coastal scenery, is the kind of experience that defines a Madeira holiday.
At a maximum of five passengers, every cruise feels genuinely private. There is space to relax, sunbathe, and absorb the surroundings at a natural pace between wildlife encounters and swim stops.

What to Expect
Meet the crew at least 10 minutes before departure at the port of Calheta. A short safety and information briefing covers everything guests need to know before setting off.
Esmeralda leaves the harbour and heads into the open Atlantic, guided by real-time information from the shore spotter. The crew explains the local cetacean species and what to look for during the search.
The boat travels to areas where dolphins, whales, or other cetaceans have been located. Guests observe from the deck in close proximity to the water. Please note that wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
The crew navigates to a secluded coastal spot for swimming or snorkeling. Masks and tubes are provided, and guests can explore at their own pace while the crew remains on hand.
With wildlife and water activities complete, guests can relax on deck and take in the island's dramatic western coastline as the yacht makes its way back toward Calheta.
The cruise concludes back at Calheta. Souvenir pictures are sent to guests following the trip as a lasting record of the experience.
