GRINGO Yacht: Private Half-Day Cruise from Calheta
Your own yacht, your own pace — swim, snorkel and discover Madeira's ocean wildlife in four unforgettable hours.
A private yacht charter in Madeira rarely comes with this level of intimacy: the GRINGO accommodates a maximum of 12 guests, meaning every moment on the water belongs exclusively to your group. Four hours strike the ideal balance between immersive exploration and fitting neatly into a relaxed island day.
Departing from the port of Calheta on Madeira's south-western coast, the crew — supported by a dedicated land-based spotter — guides the vessel toward resident and migratory cetaceans that inhabit these Atlantic waters year-round. Encounters with dolphins and whales are never guaranteed, but the spotter system meaningfully increases the odds of a genuine wildlife moment.
Between wildlife searches the itinerary opens up to swimming and snorkelling at volcanic stone coves selected by the crew for their clarity and character. Fresh drinks, bathing towels, snorkelling equipment and souvenir photographs are all included, so the only thing guests need to bring is a swimming costume.
Highlights
Explore Madeira's coastline from the water aboard a spacious, well-appointed private yacht limited to 12 guests.
A land-based spotter actively tracks cetacean movements and radios the crew in real time to maximise wildlife sightings.
Jump into clear Atlantic waters and snorkel at hand-picked volcanic coves known to the crew.
Two experienced crew members accompany every departure, with a pre-cruise safety briefing for all guests.
Fresh drinks, local beer, Portuguese white wine and sparkling wine are included throughout the cruise.
Souvenir pictures captured during the cruise are sent to guests after the trip at no extra charge.
Ideal for special occasions, family outings or small groups seeking a private and refined ocean experience.
How the Day Unfolds
Guests meet at the On Tales Whales and Dolphins store at the port of Calheta at least 15 minutes before departure. The crew conducts a short briefing covering safety procedures and the outline of the cruise.
The GRINGO sets sail from Calheta harbour. The land-based spotter begins tracking local cetacean activity and communicates findings to the crew throughout the voyage.
The crew navigates toward cetacean sightings reported by the spotter. Depending on conditions, guests may observe dolphins, whales or other marine life at respectful distances in their natural habitat.
The yacht anchors at a favourite volcanic stone cove selected by the crew. Guests are welcome to swim, snorkel using the provided equipment or simply relax on deck with a drink.
The GRINGO makes its way back to the port of Calheta, completing an approximately four-hour round trip. Souvenir photographs are sent to guests following the cruise.
