Treasure Iceland: Ice Cave Discovery on Europe's Largest Glacier
A super jeep ride, a glacier hike, and a blue ice cave — all in one unforgettable Arctic journey.
The Vatnajokull ice cave tour brings together three of Iceland's most sought-after experiences — a super jeep expedition, a guided glacier hike, and entry into a remote natural blue ice cave — within a single six-hour adventure on the largest ice cap in Europe.
Departing from the iconic Glacier Lagoon, the journey begins with a half-hour super jeep ride across the raw terrain of Vatnajokull's outer edges. The drive itself offers sweeping views of the surrounding icecap before the group sets foot on the glacier.
The hike to the ice cave covers roughly one to one and a half hours across glacial moraine and glacier surface, traversing rocky and uneven ground that demands a moderate level of fitness. All necessary glacier equipment is provided on-site.
Inside the cave, the blue color results from the extreme compression of ancient glacial ice, which absorbs red light and transmits blue wavelengths with striking intensity. The visual effect is unlike anything found on the surface, and the cave atmosphere shifts with every change in natural light.
Tour Highlights
Access to a remote natural blue ice cave deep inside the Vatnajokull icecap.
Guided glacier hike across moraines and ice with all equipment provided.
Super jeep transfer from the Glacier Lagoon to the glacier trailhead.
Outstanding photography conditions inside the vivid blue ice formations.
Exploration of Europe's largest glacier in a region of exceptional natural scenery.
Expert glacier guides with full safety briefings before each section of the hike.
Tour Itinerary
The group assembles at the Glacier Lagoon, where guides provide an overview of the route, safety protocols, and what to expect during the experience.
A purpose-built super jeep transports the group across the volcanic landscape for approximately 30 minutes to the glacier trailhead. The route crosses terrain inaccessible to standard vehicles.
The guided hike begins over rocky glacial moraine before transitioning onto the glacier surface. Crampons and other equipment are fitted at the trailhead.
After one to one and a half hours of hiking, the group enters the natural ice cave. Guides explain the geological processes that produce the cave's distinctive deep-blue color.
The group retraces the hiking route to the trailhead before the super jeep returns everyone to the Glacier Lagoon, concluding the tour after approximately six to seven hours total.
