Turda Salt Mine, Turda Gorge & Rimetea Village Day Trip
Three iconic Transylvanian landmarks in a single unforgettable day.
This day trip from Cluj-Napoca to Turda Salt Mine, Turda Gorge, and Rimetea covers three of Transylvania's most compelling rural and geological sites without the hassle of self-organizing transport or separate entrance fees. A small-group format means personalized attention from your guide throughout the day.
The route moves from underground wonder to open limestone canyon to a centuries-old village, offering a cross-section of the region's natural and cultural heritage in a single outing. All transfers between sites are included, so you can focus on the experience rather than logistics.
Traditional Romanian food is served at the final stop in Rimetea, rounding off the day with a grounded, local touch. Mountain sneakers or hiking boots are strongly recommended given the terrain at Turda Gorge.
Tour Highlights
Explore a 400-year-old salt mine that has been transformed into an underground theme park with a rowing lake and recreational facilities.
Hike through Turda Gorge, a nearly 3 km canyon with 300-metre limestone walls, cave systems, and rare karst flora and fauna.
Walk through Rimetea, Romania's first Europa Nostra award-winning village, celebrated for its preserved white-and-green architecture.
Travel in a small group for a more personal and flexible experience compared to large coach tours.
Sit down to a warm traditional Romanian meal in Rimetea, included in the tour price.
All entrance fees and transfers are covered, with no hidden costs throughout the day.
Photograph dramatic geological formations, medieval village streetscapes, and sweeping mountain landscapes across three distinct locations.
Itinerary
The tour departs from in front of the equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus near the Gothic Church of St. Michael in Cluj-Napoca's main square. From here, the group travels approximately 31 km to the first stop.
A guided tour in English introduces the mine's 400-year industrial history before free time allows visitors to use the on-site recreational facilities. Available activities include a Ferris wheel, mini golf, bowling, boating on the underground lake, pool tables, and table tennis.
A 30-minute drive leads to Turda Gorge, a complex geological, biological, and archaeological nature reserve. Depending on the group's fitness level, the hike follows either a 5 km or 9 km circular trail through the canyon's high cliffs, rock towers, and cave entrances.
The final stop is Rimetea, a well-preserved rural settlement encircled by 500 to 600-metre calcareous massifs. After a walking tour of the village's distinctive white houses with green windows, the group is served a warm traditional Romanian meal before returning to Cluj-Napoca.
