Climbing and Hiking Experience in Turda Canyon — Cheile Turzii Via Ferrata
Conquer iron-path routes and canyon trails in the heart of Transylvania, just 30 km from Cluj-Napoca.
The via ferrata Cheile Turzii delivers a guided climbing route through one of Romania's most dramatic limestone gorges, combining steel-cable ascents, scenic viewpoints, and a descent along a marked forest trail — all within a single five-hour outing.
Cheile Turzii, also called Turda Gorges, cuts through the Transylvanian plateau roughly 30 km south of Cluj-Napoca. Towering cliffs rise on both sides of the canyon, sheltering rare plant species and nesting birds including the golden eagle.
The via ferrata — an Italian term meaning "iron path" — is a protected climbing route equipped with a fixed steel cable, metal footholds, ladders, and suspension elements. No prior technical climbing experience is required, though participants should arrive in solid physical condition and be comfortable at height.
For those who prefer to stay on foot, a parallel 9 km hiking option covers three panoramic overlooks, a cave passage, and the full length of the gorge trail, offering an equally immersive experience without the vertical exposure.
Tour Highlights
Full safety harness, helmet, and via ferrata set provided — no personal gear required.
Panoramic summit views over the Transylvanian plateau from the top of the via ferrata route.
Entry into "Grota lui Hili", a fortified vertical cave carved into the canyon wall beside the climbing route.
One-way circuit design — ascend by via ferrata, descend on a separate scenic marked trail.
Hike through lush gorge vegetation with opportunities to spot golden eagles and endemic flora.
Dedicated photo session at the summit before beginning the descent trail.
On-site safety briefing and technical tutorial delivered by a certified guide before departure.
Itinerary
Guides fit every participant with harness, helmet, and via ferrata lanyard in the parking area. A technical tutorial covers correct cable-clipping technique and movement principles on the rock.
The group walks from the parking lot along the canyon floor, following the river upstream to the base of the via ferrata. This section provides an introduction to the gorge's geology and vegetation.
Before the climb begins, the group enters a small fortified cave directly adjacent to the route start. The guide explains the historical and geological significance of the formation.
Participants ascend the iron-path route, clipping onto the fixed steel cable at each anchor point. The route passes through "Grota lui Hili" and continues to the canyon rim.
A pause at the top allows the group to take in panoramic views over the gorge and the Transylvanian plateau. The guide assists with photography from the best vantage points.
The return follows a separate waymarked path back to the parking lot, passing through forested terrain above the canyon. Equipment is collected and the tour concludes at the starting point.
