Green Tour: Natural Wonders of Salaj County
Botanical gardens, ancient Roman ruins, lavender fields, and dragon-shaped rocks — a full-day escape into the green heart of Transylvania.
This Salaj County nature day tour takes you north of Cluj-Napoca through a landscape shaped by geology, history, and biodiversity. Over nine hours, you will visit five remarkable sites that most visitors to Romania never discover.
The tour is designed for travelers who value authentic experiences over crowded landmarks. Each stop has been selected for its distinct character, from a geological reservation sheltering rock formations that shift with wind and rain, to a botanical garden housing more than 5,000 plant species from across the world.
Because this is a private tour, the pace and focus can adapt to your group. Families, friends, and curious couples will all find reasons to slow down and explore here.

Itinerary
This protected natural site is considered the most striking landscape in Salaj County. The rock formations, shaped by centuries of wind, rain, and vegetation, continuously shift in form and height, drawing both tourists and scientific researchers.
Situated at 272 meters altitude within the park surrounding Wesselenyi Castle, this garden was founded in 1957 by Professor Vasile Fati and is the most recently established botanical garden in Romania. Its collections span over 5,000 plant species from different regions of the world.
Positioned on Pomat Magura hill near Moigrad Porolissum village, this Roman fortification covers an area equivalent to roughly ten football pitches and sits at 504 meters altitude. It is located approximately 15 kilometers from Zalau and remains one of the best-preserved Roman military structures in the country.
A working lavender field offers a sensory pause after the morning of exploration. The setting, with its birdsong and natural backdrop, provides a relaxed space before the final stop of the day.
Built more than two and a half centuries ago, this church is distinguished by its interior paintings in which saints are depicted with a smile, a rare detail in Romanian religious art. The church was once known for the singing icons kept within its walls.
