Þórsmörk Private Hiking Tour with Super Jeep
Cross glacial rivers, summit Valahnúkur, and explore one of Iceland's most dramatic highland reserves in a fully private setting.
This full-day private excursion takes you deep into Þórsmörk nature reserve, a rugged highland sanctuary wedged between three of Iceland's most iconic glaciers. A specially modified Super Jeep handles the river crossings so you can focus on the scenery unfolding around you.
Named after the Norse god Thor, Þórsmörk sits at the meeting point of Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull glaciers. The landscape shifts from mossy lowland valleys carpeted with Icelandic birch to raw, jagged ridgelines that reward every upward step.
The centrepiece of the day is a 90-minute hike up Valahnúkur, a 220-metre ascent that places you at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level. From the summit, glacial rivers trace silver lines through gorges below and the two great ice caps fill the horizon in opposite directions.
Because this is a private tour, the pace and focus are yours to shape. Your guide knows Þórsmörk intimately and will point out favourite corners that group tours routinely miss, from sheltered birch groves to the dramatic remnants of the 2010 Eyjafjalla eruption at Gígjökull.
Tour Highlights
Travel between Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull glaciers on a single route through the southern highlands.
Cross deep, fast-flowing glacial rivers safely inside a modified Super Jeep fitted with oversized wheels built for Iceland's highland conditions.
Hike Valahnúkur for panoramic views over the valleys and gorges of Þórsmörk from around 1,000 metres elevation.
Visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall and walk behind its 66-metre curtain of falling water on the way to the reserve.
Explore Básar, a sheltered oasis of natural birch woodland with hiking trails threading through valleys and glacial gorges.
See Gígjökull, an outlet glacier of Eyjafjallajökull, and drive across the former glacial lagoon bed reshaped by the 2010 eruption.
Keep an eye out for the Icelandic Arctic fox as you move through the mossy highland terrain around Þórsmörk.
Itinerary
Your guide collects you directly from your accommodation in Reykjavík. The drive south takes you through Iceland's coastal lowlands before the highlands come into view.
Stop at Seljalandsfoss, a 66-metre waterfall with a path that loops behind the cascade itself. Spray is common here, so waterproof gear is worth having within reach.
Drive up to Gígjökull, the outlet glacier of Eyjafjallajökull. The route passes over the former floor of a glacial lagoon that was buried during the 2010 volcanic eruption.
Enter Þórsmörk proper by crossing several glacial rivers in the modified Super Jeep. The vehicle's raised clearance and large tyres make these crossings straightforward despite the fast-moving water.
A 90-minute hike brings you to the summit of Valahnúkur at around 1,000 metres. The view covers moss-filled gorges, birch valleys, and two glaciers stretching to the skyline.
Spend time at Básar, the sheltered birch woodland area of Þórsmörk, and ask your guide to show you their favourite hidden spots before the return drive to Reykjavík.
