Itinerary
Located in southwestern Iceland, Thingvellir is where the Althing parliament convened from 930 AD onward, making it one of the oldest democratic assemblies in the world. The park also sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where two tectonic plates pull apart, forming a striking landscape of fissures and rift valleys. Visitors can walk through Almannagjá gorge, explore the park grounds, or arrange a snorkeling excursion in the Silfra fissure separately.
The Haukadalur Valley is home to Geysir, the original geyser after which all others take their name, though its eruptions are now infrequent. Strokkur, located nearby, erupts reliably every few minutes and provides a dependable and dramatic show. A gift shop and food court at the site allow for a brief refreshment break before continuing the route.
Gullfoss, translated as the Golden Falls, is among Iceland's most recognized natural landmarks. The Hvita River drops 32 meters across two stages into a narrow canyon, with mist that catches sunlight and produces the golden hue that gives the waterfall its name. Viewing platforms on both upper and lower levels provide clear vantage points of the full cascade.
Kerid is a well-preserved volcanic crater lake formed roughly 6,500 years ago in South Iceland. Its walls of deep red volcanic rock contrast sharply with the calm blue-green lake at the base, creating a visually striking natural feature. A walking path circles the rim, and a trail leads down to the water's edge. Note that the entry fee for Kerid is not included in the tour price.
Following the main circuit, you may choose to add a stop at the Secret Lagoon near Fludir or at Hvammvsik Hot Springs. Both locations offer outdoor geothermal bathing in natural settings. This stop is entirely optional and can be arranged based on your interest and remaining time.
