Sunset Over Water by RIB Boat with Optional Dolphin and Whale Watching
Chase the golden hour along Madeira's dramatic coastline from the deck of a fast RIB boat.
This Madeira sunset boat tour combines the raw scenery of the island's southern cliffs, a stop at one of Portugal's most iconic fishing villages, and the spectacle of the sun dropping below the Atlantic horizon — all aboard a nimble RIB vessel departing from Funchal Marina.
The route heads west along Madeira's southern coast, placing passengers in direct view of sheer volcanic cliffs, rugged headlands, and the deep blue of the open Atlantic. The scale of the scenery is best appreciated from the water, where the island's dramatic geography reveals itself without obstruction.
An optional dolphin and whale watching add-on is available for those who want to combine wildlife encounters with the sunset experience. Madeira's surrounding waters are among the most biodiverse cetacean habitats in Europe, making sightings a realistic — though never guaranteed — possibility.
The tour is graded Easy, making it suitable for most fitness levels. A safety briefing and lifejacket fitting are conducted before departure, and the crew remains on hand throughout the trip.

How the Tour Unfolds
Guests meet the crew at Funchal Marina for a full safety briefing and lifejacket fitting before casting off. The marina setting provides the first views of Funchal's seafront before the boat heads out.
The RIB departs westward, keeping the island's southern coastline in constant view. Volcanic rock formations, terraced hillsides, and open ocean create a continuously changing backdrop.
The boat approaches the base of Cabo Girão, one of Europe's highest coastal cliffs. Seen from the water, the scale of this natural landmark is considerably more striking than from the clifftop viewpoint above.
A pause in the bay of Câmara de Lobos allows time to take in and photograph this compact, brightly painted fishing village. The village is also the traditional birthplace of Poncha, Madeira's signature distilled drink.
The tour is timed to position the boat on open water as the sun sets over the Atlantic. Conditions vary by season and weather, and while an exceptional sunset cannot be guaranteed, the ocean setting provides a memorable close to the trip regardless.
After no less than one hour and forty-five minutes on the water, the boat returns to Funchal Marina for disembarkation. The crew assists guests off the vessel on arrival.
