Boat Dive to Garajau Natural Park or Frigate Wreck — Certified Divers
Explore one of the Atlantic's most protected marine reserves or descend into a purpose-sunken warship teeming with life.
A boat dive in Madeira's Garajau Natural Park puts certified divers face to face with large Dusky Groupers, dense fish populations, and more than three decades of marine recovery in a single underwater landscape. The wreck alternative offers the sunken F488 frigate — an 80-meter vessel prepared specifically as an artificial reef and dive attraction.
Garajau has been a protected marine area for over 35 years, and the difference is visible the moment you descend. Comb Groupers and Dusky Groupers move with unusual confidence here, accustomed to divers and unbothered by a careful approach. Sites within the park include Lazareto, T-reef, Garajau Beach, Baia dos Porcos, and Arena, each offering a distinct underwater character.
On wreck days — scheduled Monday, Wednesday, and Friday — the F488 frigate takes centre stage. Multiple penetrations are possible, and the ship structure has matured into a layered habitat that rewards photographers and curious divers alike. A torch and camera are genuinely useful here, not optional extras.

How the Dive Day Unfolds
Administrative formalities are completed at the dive centre, after which gear is assembled and inspected by the guide. This step ensures all equipment is correctly configured before the group moves toward the water.
Your guide delivers a thorough dive briefing covering the site, entry and exit procedures, depth limits, and points of interest. This is the moment to ask questions and confirm hand signals.
A short swim brings the group to the boat, which departs for the chosen site in approximately 10 to 15 minutes. The ride provides a first view of the dramatic Garajau coastline from the water.
The dive takes place at the selected site — either within the Garajau Natural Park or at the F488 frigate wreck. Your guide leads the group through the site and points out marine life along the route.
The boat returns to the dive centre, where equipment is handed back and participants can use the showers. Logbook stamps are issued, and your guide is available to discuss what was seen during the dive.
