A Day in Nature on South Rethymno
Olive groves, gorges, botanical gardens, and the Libyan Sea — all in a single Cretan day.
This South Rethymno nature tour guides you through the inland heart of Crete, connecting a scenic reservoir, a dramatic gorge, traditional hilltop villages, a botanical garden, and a south-facing beach in one unhurried journey. The route is rated easy and suited to most fitness levels. It is a genuine introduction to the landscapes and living culture that define the Rethymno regional unit.
The tour opens at the dam of the Potamon reservoir, one of the most significant wetlands in the southeast Mediterranean, holding up to 23 million cubic meters of water and supporting a recorded diversity of bird and animal species. A short drive from there leads into the gorge of Agios Antonios — also known as Patsos Gorge — where a small church sits inside a rocky cave surrounded by dense green vegetation.
After passing through traditional villages and reaching a panoramic vantage point with views north and south across Rethymno and toward the two highest peaks of Crete, the group stops at a botanical garden for a 40-minute guided walk. The garden showcases plants and herbs native to Crete, many recognised for their documented medicinal properties, and the visit concludes with a tasting of herbal tea prepared on site.
The final leg crosses the imposing Kourtaliotis Gorge and descends to Plakias, a beach on the South Cretan — or Libyan — Sea, where time is set aside for swimming and a meal with an open sea view before the return to Rethymno.
