Sanguinho Full-Day Walking Trail: Faial da Terra to Salto do Prego Waterfall
A rewarding full-day hike through endemic laurel forest, volcanic valleys, and one of Sao Miguel's most spectacular waterfalls.
The Sanguinho walking trail guides hikers from the coastal parish of Faial da Terra into the lush interior of the Povoacao municipality, tracing a path named after the endemic Frangula azorica shrub that thrives along its slopes. The route rewards walkers with dense native forest, dramatic ridge views, and a stunning natural waterfall at its midpoint.
This circular trail takes roughly 3.5 hours to complete on foot and is led by experienced local guides from Picos de Aventura. The journey unfolds through landscapes that have remained largely untouched, offering a genuine encounter with the Azorean countryside far from the island's busier visitor circuits.
The return journey follows the ribeira — a natural stream channel — that flows from the waterfall back down to Faial da Terra. Before heading back to Ponta Delgada, the group stops in Vila da Povoacao, the historically significant first settlement of Sao Miguel island.
This tour is suitable for participants aged 6 and above, making it an accessible option for families and solo travellers alike who are comfortable with moderate trail conditions and appropriate footwear.
