Landmannalaugar and Hekla Volcano Super Jeep Tour
A full-day journey through Iceland's most dramatic volcanic landscapes, from lava fields to natural hot springs
This full-day Super Jeep tour takes you deep into Iceland's volcanic interior, combining Landmannalaugar and Hekla volcano into a single unforgettable journey across lava fields, explosion craters, and colorful rhyolite mountains.
Departing from Reykjavik, the route crosses the fertile farmlands of South Iceland before climbing toward Hekla, one of the most historically active volcanoes in the world. On clear days, the snow-covered summit rises to 1,491 meters and the views from the eruptive ridge at around 900 meters above sea level are among the most striking in Iceland.
Landmannalaugar, the tour's centerpiece, sits in a remote highland basin where obsidian lava fields meet vivid painted mountains. Visitors can choose to hike the surrounding terrain or soak in the famous natural geothermal pool, heated by the same volcanic forces shaping the entire region.
The return route passes through the Þjórsárdalur valley with a stop at Gjáin, a location used as a filming backdrop in major productions, before finishing with views of Hjálparfoss waterfall on the way back to Reykjavik.
Tour Highlights
Drive up the eruptive ridge of Hekla volcano, Iceland's most historically active peak, reaching approximately 900 meters above sea level on clear-weather days.
Soak in Landmannalaugar's renowned natural hot pool, fed by geothermal water flowing directly from the surrounding highland terrain.
Explore the Landmannalaugar area on foot with an optional one to two hour hike through rhyolite mountains and obsidian lava formations.
Stop at Gjáin, a striking canyon and waterfall site in the Þjórsárdalur valley recognized as a filming location for major international productions.
Pass by the explosion crater Ljótipollur, a vivid red crater lake set against the dark highland landscape of the interior.
Travel in a Super Jeep built for Iceland's highland roads, allowing access to terrain and routes unavailable to standard vehicles.
Witness the youngest lava field produced during Hekla's last eruption in February 2000, still raw and largely unweathered at the volcano's base.
Tour Itinerary
The tour begins with pickup in Reykjavik aboard a Mountain Taxi Super Jeep. The route heads south through productive farmland with early views of Hekla's snow-capped peak appearing on the horizon.
Approaching Hekla, the group drives alongside the youngest lava field from the 2000 eruption. Weather permitting, the Super Jeep ascends the volcanic ridge to around 900 meters elevation for panoramic views across the South Iceland highlands.
The route continues deeper into the interior with a stop at Ljótipollur, a vivid crater lake formed by a violent volcanic explosion. The contrast between the red crater walls and the dark lava surroundings is striking.
Arriving in Landmannalaugar, guests have time for a one to two hour hike across the rhyolite landscape or a soak in the natural geothermal hot pool. A coffee and lunch break is included in this area.
Heading north through the Þjórsárdalur valley, the group stops at Gjáin, a photogenic canyon with cascading waterfalls and lush vegetation, known internationally as a filming location for major screen productions.
The final stretch follows the valley road back toward the capital, passing Hjálparfoss waterfall before the Super Jeep returns to Reykjavik to complete the nine-hour round trip.
