Northern Lights Private Tour in Iceland
A dedicated hunt for the Aurora Borealis, away from the crowds and into the Arctic dark.
This Northern Lights private tour takes small groups of up to six people into the Icelandic countryside aboard a comfortable Mercedes V-Class, guided by a local expert tracking real-time weather and solar activity forecasts throughout the night.
The Aurora Borealis is one of the most sought-after natural spectacles on earth, and Iceland's location just below the Arctic Circle makes it one of the best places to witness it. Rather than joining a large coach tour, this experience puts you in control — your guide adapts the route based on cloud cover, choosing remote viewing spots where the sky is darkest and the horizon is widest.
Every outing is different. The aurora can shift from pale green ribbons to vivid curtains of pink and purple within minutes, and having a knowledgeable guide on hand ensures you are positioned correctly when activity peaks. Flexible stops mean you can spend as long as you like photographing or simply standing in silence beneath the display.
The tour runs from September through April, aligning with the long Icelandic nights when darkness falls early and aurora probability is highest. Groups are kept deliberately small so the experience remains personal, unhurried, and entirely focused on what the sky has to offer that evening.

What to Expect
Your guide picks up the group from the designated meeting point in Reykjavík after darkness has settled. The Mercedes V-Class is prepared for an extended evening drive into the countryside.
The vehicle travels away from city lights toward pre-assessed locations offering clear, wide skies. Your guide provides background on the aurora phenomenon and explains what to look for.
The group steps out at a quiet rural location selected for minimal light interference. Your guide monitors aurora alerts and points out the first signs of activity on the horizon.
If cloud cover shifts or a stronger display appears elsewhere, the tour route adapts immediately. The group may visit two or three locations during the four-hour window to maximise sighting opportunities.
At each stop, time is given for long-exposure shots and personal moments under the sky. Your guide can offer basic tips for capturing the lights on camera.
After approximately four hours, the vehicle returns to the original departure point in Reykjavík. The exact return time may vary depending on conditions encountered during the hunt.
