Private Ice Climbing Experience in Skaftafell with Photo Guide
Ascend the ancient blue walls of Falljokull Glacier on a fully guided private adventure in Vatnajokull National Park.
This private ice climbing experience in Skaftafell is designed for all ability levels, combining glacier hiking with hands-on instruction on real ice walls inside one of Iceland's most spectacular national parks.
Led by experienced glacier guides from Ice Pic Journeys, the tour takes participants across the rugged terrain of Falljokull Glacier aboard a 4x4 vehicle before transitioning to foot travel across ancient ice. The route passes moulins, crevasses, and sculpted ice formations that bring the landscape's geological history into sharp focus.
The climbing portion of the day is structured to build confidence progressively. Guides introduce front-pointing technique on accessible walls before moving toward more demanding faces as skills develop. The private format means the pace and challenge level are adjusted entirely around the participant.
A professionally edited five-image photo package is included per person, delivered via cloud link approximately 14 days after the tour. Ice Pic Journeys is the only operator in Iceland offering this kind of dedicated photography service as a standard inclusion on glacier tours.

Itinerary
The tour begins at the Skaftafell Airport Terminal inside Vatnajokull National Park. From there, a purpose-equipped 4x4 vehicle carries the group along an F-Road across glacial plains, with the guide sharing geological context throughout the approximately 20 to 30-minute drive.
At the glacier parking area, the guide distributes and fits all equipment, including crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and helmets. A thorough safety briefing follows at the ice edge, covering movement techniques and on-glacier protocols before the group steps onto the ice.
With crampons secured, the group walks up the surface of Falljokull Glacier toward the climbing area. The guide highlights glacial features along the route, including moulins and crevasses formed by centuries of ice movement.
The guide introduces front-pointing technique and basic climbing form on shorter, accessible walls. As confidence builds, the group moves to progressively more challenging faces, including vertical sections, glacial holes, or overhanging formations depending on ability.
After completing the climbing session, the group hikes back across the glacier to the parking area. A short 10-minute drive returns everyone to the starting point, concluding the glacier portion of the day.
