Itinerary Overview
Your guide will meet you at the Glacier Lagoon parking lot in Vatnajokull National Park, located across from the restrooms in the bus parking area. Arriving 15 minutes early is recommended so you can use the facilities before the tour begins, as there are no restrooms available at the glacier.
You will board a 4x4 vehicle and travel along an F-Road toward the glacier, a journey of roughly 20 to 30 minutes from the main road. Your guide will share the history and geology of the surrounding landscape as you pass through the ancient glacial plain.
At the glacier parking lot, you will be fitted with crampons, an ice axe, a harness, and a helmet before beginning a 30-minute hike across flat, rocky ground to the edge of the glacier. Your guide will conduct a full safety briefing before anyone steps onto the ice.
You will enter the Crystal Ice Cave and move through its chambers as your guide-photographer positions you within the most visually compelling sections. The cave's translucent blue walls and naturally sculpted ceiling create an otherworldly setting that changes in character the deeper you go.
Exiting the cave, you will hike across Breidamerkurjokull Glacier toward the crystal crevasses, passing glacial moulins and ice formations along the way. Descending into the crevasse reveals an intensifying blue that deepens the further you travel into the ice canyon.
After approximately an hour exploring the crevasse formations, you will hike back to the glacier parking lot and return by 4x4 to the Glacier Lagoon, where the tour concludes. Your edited photo package will be delivered within approximately 14 days.
