Brasov: Private Fagaras Mountains Trekking Tour
A challenging ascent through the highest alpine terrain in Romania, from glacial lakes to dramatic Carpathian ridgelines.
This full-day private tour takes you from Brasov into the heart of the Fagaras Mountains trekking experience, combining a scenic drive along the legendary Transfagarasan Road with a 4-to-5-hour hike through some of Romania's most spectacular high-altitude landscapes.
Departing from Brasov, the journey follows the Transfagarasan Road — a winding mountain highway open from July through October — arriving at Balea Lake, a glacial lake sitting at approximately 2,034 meters above sea level. From there, the trail climbs toward Capra Lake, offering sweeping views of the Fagaras ridge at every turn.
Depending on weather conditions encountered on the day, the guide may lead the group onward to the summit of Vanatoarea lui Buteanu at 2,507 meters, making this one of the more demanding day hikes available from Brasov. Alternatively, a scenic walk around Capra Lake provides a rewarding experience for those who prefer a less strenuous finish.
Between November and June, when the Transfagarasan Road is closed, the itinerary shifts to the Valea Sambetei area of the Fagaras Mountains, ensuring a quality alpine experience is available year-round.

Itinerary
The tour begins in Brasov, where your private vehicle departs toward the Fagaras Mountains. The drive to Balea Lake along the Transfagarasan Road takes approximately 2 hours and passes through forested valleys and open mountain terrain.
Upon arrival at Balea Lake, the guide provides a briefing on the route ahead and checks current weather and trail conditions. This glacial lake serves as the trailhead for the main ascent.
The trail climbs from Balea Lake up toward Capra Lake, following a well-marked alpine path with open ridgeline views. The section involves steady elevation gain and covers some of the most scenic terrain in the Fagaras range.
Depending on weather conditions, the guide leads the group toward the Vanatoarea lui Buteanu summit at 2,507 meters or on a walk around Capra Lake. Both options provide rewarding alpine scenery and a meaningful conclusion to the ascent.
After descending to Balea Lake, guests have the option to enjoy a meal at the Balea Lake Hotel. This is a good opportunity to rest and reflect before the return drive.
The tour concludes with the 2-hour drive back to Brasov along the Transfagarasan Road. The total duration including driving and hiking is approximately 9 hours.
