Levada do Norte: Cabo Girão to Ribeira Brava
A gentle trail through terraced farmland with sweeping views over the south coast.
The Levada do Norte walk follows one of Madeira's most scenic irrigation channels, tracing a steady path from the heights of Cabo Girão toward the valley of Ribeira Brava. The route rewards walkers with broad panoramic views across Câmara de Lobos and Campanário, framed by the Atlantic horizon.
The path winds through a working agricultural landscape where banana plantations, vegetable gardens, and vineyards line the channel banks. Clusters of whitewashed houses and small village centres appear at intervals, offering an authentic glimpse into the everyday life of the south coast communities.
Rated as easy in difficulty, this 7-kilometre trail is accessible to most fitness levels and can be comfortably completed in around four hours. The mild microclimate of the south coast makes this walk a practical choice throughout the year, without the heat extremes found at lower elevations.

Itinerary
The tour begins at the Cabo Girão area, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Walkers join the levada channel and set off eastward along the south-facing slope.
As the path progresses, the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos comes into view far below. The contrast between the deep valley and the open sea makes for a striking outlook.
The trail passes through carefully maintained terraced fields. Banana plantations, grape vines, and small vegetable gardens reflect the traditional farming practices of the region.
The route passes close to the village of Campanário, where local homes, small chapels, and quiet lanes add a cultural dimension to the walk.
The walk concludes near Ribeira Brava, a coastal town at the mouth of a river valley. The endpoint offers a natural finishing point before return transport is arranged.
