Madeira Safari - West of the Island
Ancient roads, dramatic landscapes, and open-roof adventure across western Madeira
The Madeira West Safari takes you deep into the island's rugged western terrain aboard open-roof 4x4 vehicles, revealing a side of Madeira that most visitors never reach. Over seven hours, the route connects volcanic coastlines, highland plateaus, and centuries-old farming villages in a single continuous journey.
Madeira's western region holds some of the island's most striking contrasts. Within the span of a few kilometres, the landscape shifts from towering sea cliffs at Cape Girão to the wide, windswept plateau of Paúl do Serra, where cattle graze at over 1,000 metres above sea level.
The open-roof design of every vehicle is a deliberate choice, not a novelty. It allows passengers to observe the full vertical sweep of the terrain, from the valley floors carved by ancient rivers to the ridge lines draped in laurel forest. Local guides draw on the history and traditions of each stop, providing context that a self-guided drive cannot offer.
Throughout the route, the tour passes through communities shaped by generations of agriculture, fishing, and craftsmanship. Markets, traditional factories, and terraced hillsides tell the story of how islanders have lived alongside this demanding landscape for centuries.

Itinerary
The tour begins at Câmara de Lobos, a fishing village once painted by Winston Churchill, before ascending to Cape Girão. At roughly 580 metres, this sea cliff offers one of the most dramatic coastal perspectives in Europe.
The route descends to Ribeira Brava, a small south-coast town set at the mouth of a deep river valley. The town square, parish church, and local market make it a natural stop for learning about everyday Madeiran life.
The 4x4 vehicles climb to the Paúl do Serra, a vast moorland plateau sitting above 1,000 metres. The open landscape, grazing cattle, and frequent low cloud create a striking contrast to the coastal scenery below.
On the island's north-western tip, Porto Moniz is known for its natural lava pools, formed by ancient volcanic flows meeting the Atlantic. The village itself preserves traditional architecture and a working fishing culture.
The coastal road east from Porto Moniz passes through Seixal, a village backed by waterfalls and cliffs. The journey continues to São Vicente, where a cave system and a river canyon define the local geography.
