Lagoa do Fogo Full-Day Walking Tour
A guided trek through volcanic forest and lava levadas to the shores of one of the Azores' most untouched crater lakes.
The Lagoa do Fogo hiking tour leads you through a landscape shaped by centuries of volcanic activity, offering dense native forest, a scenic water channel walk, and sweeping coastal views before arriving at a pristine caldera lake high in the heart of São Miguel island.
The route begins on a compacted earth path that climbs steadily through mixed woodland, then follows approximately two kilometres of levada — a traditional irrigation channel — flanked by steep valley walls on both sides. This section of the trail rewards careful walkers with birdlife, endemic flora, and the kind of quiet that only remote terrain can offer.
As you gain elevation, the village of Vila Franca do Campo and its iconic offshore islet come into view, providing a natural landmark against the Atlantic horizon. The group pauses for a packed lunch at the edge of Lagoa do Fogo itself, a lake sitting inside an ancient volcanic crater at roughly 700 metres above sea level.
The descent follows a separate path through endemic vegetation zones that gradually give way to open pasture, offering a different perspective on the island's ecology. The day concludes with a stop at either the Caloura coastal swimming area or Praia de Água d'Alto, giving participants the chance to cool off before returning to Ponta Delgada.

Itinerary
The group assembles at the Picos de Aventura base for a safety and route briefing. Equipment checks are carried out and any questions are addressed before departure.
The hike begins on a dirt track climbing through dense woodland. The gradient is steady and the tree canopy provides natural shelter during the initial ascent.
The trail joins a levada for approximately two kilometres, contouring the hillside between high slopes on either side. This section passes through some of the most atmospheric terrain on the route.
The group reaches the crater lake shore, with panoramic views across the caldera. A lunch break is taken here, with time to rest and take in the surroundings.
The return route passes through native plant communities before opening onto pastureland at lower elevation. The change in habitat makes this section botanically distinct from the ascent.
Before returning to Ponta Delgada, the group visits a coastal bathing spot for an optional swim. This marks the end of the active portion of the day before the transfer back.
