Kayak in Peneda-Gerês National Park
Paddle serene lakes, discover hidden waterfalls, and taste authentic Portuguese cuisine in Portugal's only national park.
This Peneda-Gerês kayaking day tour takes you well beyond Porto's city limits and into one of the most pristine natural landscapes in the Iberian Peninsula. A 4x4 vehicle collects you from a pre-selected meeting point, setting the tone for a full day of outdoor exploration with a small, like-minded group.
Caniçada Lake offers a calm and welcoming setting for a morning on the water. The kayak session is designed with beginners in mind, so no prior paddling experience is required. Between strokes, the surrounding mountain scenery provides a backdrop that is difficult to find elsewhere in Portugal.
After time on the lake, the group gathers at a local restaurant for a traditional Portuguese lunch, with vinho verde included. The afternoon shifts to a short forest walk leading to a secluded waterfall, where crystal-clear water and the sound of nature offer a natural pause before the return journey to Porto.

Itinerary
Your guide collects you by 4x4 from a pre-selected meeting point in Porto. The drive north takes you through gradually changing scenery as the city gives way to the mountains of the Minho region.
On arrival at Peneda-Gerês National Park, you launch onto Caniçada Lake for approximately 90 minutes of guided kayaking. The session is suitable for complete beginners, with instruction provided before you set off.
A stop at a small sandy beach gives you time to swim, relax, and try stand-up paddleboarding on the calm lake surface. This is a natural midpoint to rest before heading to lunch.
The group enjoys a hearty meal at a local restaurant known for honest, regional cooking. Vinho verde is included, offering a genuine taste of northern Portuguese food culture.
A short walk of around 25 minutes each way leads to a secluded waterfall within the national park. You can swim in the natural pool at its base and take in some of the most scenic views the park has to offer.
