Hacienda Baru Wildlife Nature Tour from Manuel Antonio
Where primary rainforest meets honest conservation, and every trail holds a living discovery
The Hacienda Baru Wildlife Nature Tour takes you into one of Costa Rica's most respected private conservation reserves, where certified naturalist guides lead you through ecosystems shaped by decades of dedicated land protection. This is a half-day journey designed for curious travelers who prefer substance over spectacle.
Hacienda Baru, located near the coastal town of Dominical, operates as a working model of what responsible ecotourism can achieve when conservation is the primary goal. The reserve shelters a remarkable range of wildlife within its trails, including howler and white-faced monkeys, three-toed sloths, peccaries, land crabs, and an impressive variety of bird species including the great curassow.
Your guide will do more than point out animals. Expect a genuine explanation of ecosystem dynamics, symbiotic relationships between species, and the ecological significance of the forest layers you walk through. The experience is grounded in science and delivered with clear enthusiasm for the natural world.
Following the reserve tour, a short stop is included at Portalon Waterfall, a modest but genuinely refreshing cascade with calm river pools that offer a welcome contrast to the forest heat. A traditional Costa Rican lunch rounds out the outing before the return to Manuel Antonio.

Itinerary
Your guide collects you from the meeting point near Manuel Antonio National Park entrance and the group departs toward Dominical along the coastal highway.
The group arrives at the reserve and begins an approximately two-hour guided nature walk. Your certified naturalist will lead the trail searching for wildlife and explaining the ecological systems at work throughout the forest.
After the nature walk concludes, the group boards transport and heads toward the second stop on the route.
A short visit to Portalon Waterfall allows guests to cool off in the natural river pools at the base of the cascade. The waterfall is modest in scale but the swimming area is calm and refreshing.
On the way back to Manuel Antonio, the group stops for a traditional Costa Rican lunch, offering a taste of local cuisine in a relaxed setting.
The group returns to Manuel Antonio with drop-off at or near your accommodation. Actual arrival time may vary based on group pace, time spent at the waterfall, and road conditions.
