Rabaçal & 25 Fontes: A Walk Through Madeira's Laurisilva Forest
Follow ancient water channels into the heart of a UNESCO-listed forest to discover 25 natural springs and cascading waterfalls.
The Rabaçal 25 Fontes trail is widely regarded as one of the most rewarding pedestrian routes on the island of Madeira, drawing walkers into a landscape shaped by centuries of laurel and heather forest. This full-day experience combines the drama of multiple waterfalls with the tranquility of a well-preserved levada path.
The trail winds through the Laurisilva forest, a remnant of the subtropical woodland that once covered much of southern Europe and is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walkers move alongside centuries-old laurel, tree heath, and mossy stonework that lines the historic irrigation channels known as levadas.
At the heart of the route lies the basin of the 25 Fontes, a natural amphitheater fed by 25 individual springs that converge into a single clear pool beneath a striking waterfall. The combination of sound, light, and water at this location makes it a highlight that justifies the moderate effort required to reach it.

Itinerary Overview
The group assembles at the designated meeting point and travels by vehicle to the Rabaçal rest house, the starting point of the walk at an elevation of approximately 1,060 meters.
The trail begins with a descent along a paved path into the valley, where the surrounding vegetation transitions quickly into dense laurel forest. The air becomes cooler and more humid as walkers drop in altitude.
Walkers join the Levada do Risco and follow it along the cliff face to the Risco waterfall, which plunges dramatically from the basalt escarpment above. This is a natural pause point for photography and rest.
The route continues to the 25 Fontes basin, where the 25 springs feed a clear mountain pool surrounded by towering rock walls and dense vegetation. Walkers have time to take in the scenery before returning.
The group retraces the levada path back to the Rabaçal rest house and returns to the vehicle for the journey back to the original meeting point, concluding the seven-hour experience.
