Jeep Tour of the Golgo Plateau from Arbatax
Discover wild Sardinian highlands, ancient sinkholes, and sacred hilltop churches in a single four-hour expedition.
This Golgo Plateau jeep tour takes you deep into one of Sardinia's most untouched landscapes, covering roughly 90 kilometres of off-road terrain across the rugged Baunei highlands. With a knowledgeable local guide at the wheel, you reach viewpoints and geological wonders that are simply inaccessible by conventional vehicle.
The Golgo Plateau sits at the heart of the Ogliastra region, a limestone tableland carved by millennia of erosion into cliffs, sinkholes, and hidden valleys. The landscape shifts constantly as the jeep moves between open meadows, dense macchia scrub, and dramatic rock formations.
Short walking stretches at each stop allow you to step out, breathe the mountain air, and absorb the surroundings at a human pace. Each halt lasts around 20 minutes, keeping the pace comfortable while covering a generous variety of landmarks throughout the half-day.
Tour Highlights
Panoramic views from the Belvedere S'Iscaladorgio overlook across the Baunei coast and plateau.
A visit to Su Sterru, one of the deepest natural sinkholes in Europe, plunging over 270 metres into the earth.
The remote Church of San Pietro, a nuragic-era sacred site still used for traditional Sardinian festivals.
As Piscinas, a cluster of natural rock pools fed by freshwater springs hidden within the plateau.
Approximately 90 km of authentic off-road tracks navigated in a purpose-built jeep with an expert local driver.
Short, easy walking segments at each stop suitable for most fitness levels, rated as an easy difficulty tour.
Free pick-up from your accommodation in the Tortoli-Arbatax area, arranged directly with the guide after booking.
Itinerary
The tour opens at a sweeping panoramic viewpoint above the plateau. The elevated vantage point frames the Tyrrhenian coastline and the layered limestone cliffs of the Supramonte range in a single view.
The jeep descends toward Us Piggius before continuing to As Piscinas, a series of natural freshwater pools set among smooth limestone. A short walk connects the two sites through low Mediterranean scrub.
Su Sterru is one of the most extraordinary geological features in Sardinia, a near-vertical shaft dropping more than 270 metres below the plateau surface. The viewing area sits at the rim and requires only a brief walk from the vehicle.
Set in an isolated clearing on the plateau, the ancient Church of San Pietro is a landmark of Sardinian religious heritage. The site is still the focal point of traditional pilgrimages and local feast-day celebrations.
The tour concludes at an unusual rock formation known locally as the Stone Mask, a natural sculpting of limestone that bears an uncanny resemblance to a human face. This is a favourite photographic stop before the return journey.
