Selvaggio Blu: 7-Day Guided Trek Along Sardinia's Wild East Coast
Ancient mule tracks, sheer sea cliffs, and shepherd hospitality on Italy's most demanding coastal trail.
The Selvaggio Blu trek is widely regarded as the most technically challenging long-distance route in Italy, tracing a raw and largely untouched stretch of Sardinia's eastern coastline between Arbatax and Cala Sisine. Over seven days, participants traverse a landscape of limestone cliffs, deep canyons, ancient shepherd paths, and crystal-clear coves that remain inaccessible by road. Two certified mountain guides lead every stage, managing rope descents and technical passages so that groups can move safely through genuinely wild terrain.
The route follows corridors once used by charcoal burners and transhumant shepherds, passing through places that carry their own distinct character: the dramatic sea stack of Pedra Longa, the remote anchorage of Porto Pedrosu, and the highland plateau of Golgo with its ancient domus de janas rock tombs. Each evening, participants camp under open skies or shelter in traditional sheepfold enclosures called cuiles, where hosts serve dinners built around local Sardinian ingredients. These overnight stops are not a concession to comfort but an integral part of understanding how people have lived in this landscape for centuries.
Logistics are handled comprehensively so that trekkers can focus entirely on the experience. Transfers to and from Cagliari and Olbia airports are included at both ends of the trip, mountaineering equipment is provided, and a dinghy transfer on Day Five connects the inland section to the coastal cove of Cala Biriola. The final stage concludes at Cala Sisine, one of the most celebrated unspoilt beaches on the Tyrrhenian coast, before an off-road or sea transfer returns the group to Arbatax.
This itinerary is designed for hikers who already possess solid trail experience and good physical conditioning. Sections rated EEA (Escursionismo Esperto Attrezzato) involve exposed traverses, rope-assisted descents, and short technical climbs that demand both focus and cooperation from every member of the group. Those who meet the standard will encounter a version of Sardinia that the vast majority of visitors never see.

Itinerary Overview
Participants meet the guides at Arbatax marina for a full equipment check and briefing session, including a review of rope manoeuvres. Transfer to B&B accommodation for the first night and a group dinner.
A minibus transfer delivers the group to the iconic sea stack of Pedra Longa, where the trail proper begins. The stage climbs 800 m through coastal scrub and limestone terrain before descending to the first wild campsite at Gennirco. Dinner is served in a traditional sheepfold.
The second stage descends 800 m toward the remote anchorage of Porto Pedrosu along ancient shepherd tracks with increasingly exposed coastal views. Difficulty rises to EE, requiring sure footing on uneven and rocky surfaces. Camp is set up independently by the group.
These are the most demanding days of the route, crossing the highland plateau of Golgo and descending toward Mudaloru with rope-assisted passages and exposed traverses rated EEA. On Day 5 a dinghy transfers the group to Cala Biriola, a wild cove reachable only from the sea or the trail.
The fifth and final hiking stage concludes at Cala Sisine, one of Sardinia's most celebrated unspoilt beaches. An off-road vehicle or dinghy returns the group to Arbatax for a last dinner and overnight stay at the B&B.
After breakfast and farewells, participants are transferred to Cagliari or Olbia airport or port. Transfers to Alghero airport or Porto Torres port can be arranged at an additional cost.
