Private Winter Glacier Zipline and Crystal Ice Cave Tour from Glacier Lagoon
Soar over a glacial moulin and explore Iceland's most vivid natural ice cave on one unforgettable private adventure.
The Private Winter Glacier Zipline and Ice Cave Tour combines two of Iceland's most extraordinary glacial experiences into a single three-hour expedition on Breidamerkurjokull Glacier inside Vatnajokull National Park. Guests zip across the glacier directly above a vertical ice formation known as a moulin before descending into the celebrated Crystal Ice Cave below. This private format ensures an intimate, guided experience tailored entirely to your group.
Vatnajokull National Park is home to Europe's largest glacier, and this tour places you at its most dynamic edge. The route from the Glacier Lagoon parking lot involves a scenic 4x4 transfer across an ancient glacial plain, a thirty-minute hike over flat rocky terrain, and then a full hour of guided exploration inside the ice cave. Each element of the itinerary is designed to complement the next, moving naturally from the cave's blue chambers to the open expanse of the glacier above.
The Crystal Ice Cave, also called the Sapphire Ice Cave, is a naturally formed structure that changes shape, size, and location each season as it melts and reforms. No two visits are identical, and your guide documents the experience with photographs taken from the best vantage points inside the cave. The glacier hike that follows leads directly to the zipline site, where the panoramic ice horizon stretches in every direction.
Difficulty is rated moderate, meaning guests should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain and following safety instructions from their guide. Crampons, an ice axe, a harness, a helmet with headlamp, and optional hired hiking boots are all provided as part of the standard gear package. Cold-weather layering is strongly recommended, as conditions on the glacier are significantly colder and windier than at the meeting point.

Itinerary
Arrive at the Glacier Lagoon parking lot in Vatnajokull National Park at least fifteen minutes before your scheduled start time. Your guide will be waiting near the bus parking area with the Ice Pic Journeys vehicle. Restrooms are available at this location and will not be accessible again during the tour.
Board the 4x4 vehicle and travel toward Breidamerkurjokull Glacier, turning onto an F-Road approximately ten minutes into the drive. The full journey from the parking lot to the glacier base takes between twenty and thirty minutes across a rugged glacial plain. Your guide provides commentary on the area's geological and natural history during the ride.
At the glacier parking area, your guide distributes all required equipment including crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet, and headlamp. A thirty-minute hike on flat, slightly rocky terrain leads to the entrance of the Crystal Ice Cave. The pace is set to match the group, and no previous hiking experience is required for this section.
After a safety briefing and crampon fitting at the cave entrance, your group enters the naturally formed glacial chamber. Approximately one hour is spent exploring multiple chambers inside the cave, with your guide pointing out ice formations and capturing photographs throughout. The cave's shape and scale vary each season, making each visit a distinct experience.
Exiting the cave, your group transitions onto the surface of Breidamerkurjokull Glacier and hikes toward the zipline site. Along the route, the guide points out glacial moulins and surface formations across the open ice landscape. At the zipline, each guest launches across the glacier and over a vertical moulin, taking in panoramic views of the surrounding ice field.
After the zipline, the group hikes back to the glacier parking area and boards the 4x4 for the return drive to the Glacier Lagoon. The tour concludes at the original meeting point, where guests part ways with their guide. Total on-glacier time including the ice cave and zipline is approximately three hours from this meeting point.
