Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach Tour From Djupivogur Port
A seven-hour journey along Iceland's southeast coast, from drifting icebergs to black-sand shores scattered with glacial gems.
This Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach tour from Djupivogur Port is designed specifically for cruise-ship guests who want to make the most of their time in southeast Iceland without missing their ship's departure.
Departing from the quiet harbour town of Djupivogur, the route travels southward along a coastline shaped by volcanic forces and glacial retreat. Vatnajokull, Iceland's largest ice cap, looms on the horizon for much of the journey, setting the scene for what lies ahead.
At Jokulsarlon, icebergs calved from the Breidarmerkurjokull glacial tongue drift through Iceland's deepest lake in shades of blue and grey, occasionally streaked with dark ash from past volcanic eruptions. Nearby, Diamond Beach offers an equally striking sight — polished chunks of ice resting on black volcanic sand, catching whatever light the Icelandic sky provides.
The return leg stops at the Hvalnes Peninsula, where the isolated lighthouse and the angular peak of Eystrahorn mountain create a landscape that has drawn photographers for generations. An experienced local guide accompanies the group throughout, and free WiFi is available on board.
Tour Highlights
Watch icebergs drift serenely across Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, Iceland's deepest lake, carved by the retreating Breidarmerkurjokull glacier.
Walk along Diamond Beach, where translucent chunks of glacial ice wash ashore against a backdrop of jet-black volcanic sand.
Look out for Arctic terns nesting near the lagoon and seals resting on icebergs or swimming in the glacial waters.
Photograph the dramatic horn-shaped peak of Eystrahorn mountain near the Hvalnes lighthouse, especially striking in the late afternoon light.
Travel southeast Iceland's most scenic coastal corridor with a knowledgeable local guide providing context throughout the journey.
The excursion is timed precisely around cruise-ship schedules, ensuring you return to Djupivogur Port before your vessel departs.
Stay connected with complimentary on-board WiFi during the transfers between Iceland's most iconic glacial landmarks.
Itinerary
The tour begins at the harbour in Djupivogur, a small fishing village on Iceland's east coast. The group boards the vehicle and heads southward along the Ring Road with Vatnajokull visible on the western horizon.
The centrepiece of the tour, Jokulsarlon formed in the 1970s as the Breidarmerkurjokull glacier retreated, leaving a vast body of water that became Iceland's deepest lake. Icebergs calved from the glacier drift through the lagoon in shifting shades of blue, some carrying brownish stripes from volcanic ash deposited decades ago. An optional boat ride among the icebergs is available at extra cost during summer months.
A short distance from the lagoon, Diamond Beach is the black-sand shoreline where icebergs that have passed through the lagoon and out to sea are eventually washed back ashore. The contrast between the transparent ice and the dark volcanic sand is unlike anything else in Iceland. Seals are often spotted playing in the surf nearby.
On the return route, the group stops at the Hvalnes Peninsula, where a solitary lighthouse stands against the sea. The distinctive horn-shaped peak of Eystrahorn rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape, and small reflective lakes near the road offer mirror-like views of the mountain on calm days.
The tour concludes back at the harbour in Djupivogur, with guests returned in time for their cruise ship's departure. The guide will confirm timing details at the start of the excursion.
