South Coast, Black Sand Beach & Glacier Lagoon Small Group Tour with Ice Cave
Two days of waterfalls, icebergs, black sand, and glacial wonder along Iceland's legendary South Coast.
This 2-day Iceland South Coast tour brings together the country's most iconic natural landmarks into a single, well-paced small group journey departing from Reykjavík. From the thundering cascades of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss to the drifting icebergs of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, every stop delivers a distinct and remarkable encounter with Iceland's raw landscape.
The first day follows the South Coast eastward, pausing at two of Iceland's most celebrated waterfalls before continuing toward the south-east, where guests spend the night in the region. Along the way, there is an opportunity to search for the Northern Lights after dark, adding a potential layer of wonder to the evening.
Day two ventures deeper into the glacial south-east, visiting Jökulsárlón and the adjacent Diamond Beach before returning westward past Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. An optional Crystal Ice Cave excursion can be added to the package, giving travelers a chance to step inside a glacier and witness its interior formations firsthand.
Tour Highlights
Walk behind the curtain of Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of Iceland's most interactive natural landmarks.
Stand at the base of Skógafoss and climb the adjacent staircase for panoramic views of the South Coast.
Cruise among floating icebergs at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, formed by the retreat of Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier.
Explore Diamond Beach, where ice chunks from the lagoon wash ashore and glitter against the dark sand.
Visit Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and its striking basalt columns rising along the Atlantic shoreline.
Search for the Northern Lights on the evening of Day 1, away from city light pollution.
Add an optional Crystal Ice Cave tour for an up-close encounter with Iceland's glacial interior.
Itinerary
The tour departs Reykjavík and heads east along the South Coast. The first major stop is Seljalandsfoss, where a path leads visitors behind the 60-meter cascade for a view that few waterfalls in the world can offer.
Continuing east, the group reaches Skógafoss on the Skógá River. Visitors can stand in the mist at its base or climb the staircase beside the falls to take in the sweeping landscape above.
As darkness falls, the guide scouts for Northern Lights activity in the south-east region before the group settles in at the overnight hotel. Clear skies can make this an outstanding complement to the day's highlights.
Day two begins at Jökulsárlón, where icebergs calved from Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier drift slowly across a deep glacial lake. Just across the road, Diamond Beach is scattered with translucent ice chunks resting on black sand.
Travelers who choose to add the ice cave excursion are guided into a glacier cave formed within the Vatnajökull ice cap. The cave's blue and white interior offers a dramatic perspective on Iceland's glacial geology.
The final stop before returning to the capital is Reynisfjara, known for its dark volcanic sand, basalt column formations, and the powerful North Atlantic surf. The group then travels back to Reykjavík, concluding the two-day circuit.
