4-Day Azores Tour: Island Adventure and Nature Highlights on São Miguel
Volcanic lakes, geothermal wonders, and botanical gardens on Portugal's most dramatic island
This São Miguel guided island tour offers four days of immersive exploration across the Azores' largest and most diverse island, pairing iconic natural landmarks with authentic cultural encounters. Guests travel in a small private group of up to eight, with English-speaking guides, comfortable 4-star accommodation and curated meals included throughout.
São Miguel is defined by its volcanic origins, and this itinerary makes full use of that drama. From the steaming fumaroles of Furnas to the twin lakes sitting silently inside the Sete Cidades caldera, each day presents a landscape shaped by forces still very much at work beneath the surface.
Beyond the geology, the island rewards those who look closer. Terra Nostra Park's centuries-old botanical gardens surround a naturally heated pool, while a visit to one of Europe's only working tea plantations offers a quieter, equally memorable moment. Private transfers remove the logistical burden, leaving guests free to absorb the experience at each stop.
Tour Highlights
Stand at panoramic viewpoints overlooking the twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades, one of the Azores' most recognisable natural landmarks.
Experience the geothermal energy of Furnas up close, from boiling mud pools and fumaroles in the village to the hot spring pools of Terra Nostra Park.
Stroll through the renowned botanical gardens of Terra Nostra Park, home to exotic plant species and a naturally heated thermal pool.
Visit a working tea plantation — one of very few in Europe — and sample locally produced tea in its original growing environment.
Discover Lagoa do Fogo, a pristine crater lake set within a nature reserve in the heart of São Miguel, accessible only on foot.
Enjoy a traditional Cozido das Furnas lunch, a slow-cooked stew prepared using the natural geothermal heat of the earth.
Rest and recover each night in 4-star accommodation in Ponta Delgada, with private transfers handling all logistics between sites.
Day-by-Day Itinerary

The western calderas take centre stage on day three. The route takes in Pico do Carvão, the Vista do Rei viewpoint, Sete Cidades village, Lagoa do Fogo and Pico da Barrosa, before finishing with a visit to Caldeira Velha and the town of Ribeira Grande. Lunch is served in the Sete Cidades area.
