Canyoning at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes with Parque Terra Nostra Visit
Rappel through volcanic gorges, savour a thermal valley lunch, and unwind in ancient hot springs — all in one unforgettable Azorean day.
Canyoning at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes combines technical adventure in a protected natural reserve with an immersive journey through two of Sao Miguel's most iconic landmarks. This full-day experience is crafted for those who want to go well beyond a standard island tour.
The route begins in Ponta Delgada and heads northeast across the island, skirting the only commercially active tea plantations on European soil. Upon reaching the Ribeira dos Caldeiroes Natural Monument, participants gear up and follow a short trail to the river section, where the real action starts.
The canyon itself offers a varied sequence of challenges: eight-metre abseil descents down volcanic cascades, a natural waterslide carved by centuries of flowing water, and a four-metre free jump into a clear pool below. After the canyon, the day shifts pace entirely, moving on to the Valle das Furnas for a traditional Cozido das Furnas lunch and a restorative afternoon inside the botanical gardens of Parque Terra Nostra.

Itinerary
The group departs from Picos de Aventura in Ponta Delgada. The drive to the northeast takes approximately 40 minutes and passes through the island's famous tea-growing region.
On arrival at the park, guides distribute wetsuits and all technical canyoning gear. A 20-minute access trail leads to the river entry point, where a full safety briefing is conducted.
The canyon route includes rappelling vertical drops, navigating a natural waterslide, and completing a four-metre jump. Sections of easy walking link the technical obstacles throughout the descent.
After the canyon, the group travels roughly 20 minutes to the geothermal valley of Furnas. The shift in landscape — from forested canyon to steaming calderas — is immediate and striking.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant and consists of Cozido das Furnas, a hearty Portuguese stew prepared in pots buried in the volcanic soil. It is one of the most distinctive culinary experiences on the island.
The afternoon is spent in the botanical gardens, followed by a soak in the thermal pool. The return journey to Ponta Delgada follows the southern coast, taking approximately 40 minutes.
