Private Tour to Elafonissi Beach from Rethymno
Pink-sand shores, mountain villages, and ancient monasteries on one sweeping Cretan journey
This private tour to Elafonissi Beach from Rethymno takes you on a full-day scenic drive across Crete, passing through rugged mountain gorges, centuries-old monasteries, and storied cave chapels before arriving at one of the island's most celebrated coastlines. The route connects the north coast to the south-west in a single, unhurried arc through authentic Cretan landscapes.
Elafonissi is positioned on the south-west tip of Crete, where a shallow lagoon separates the main beach from a small islet that visitors can reach on foot through warm, knee-deep water. The combination of white and coral-red sand with transparent turquoise shallows produces a setting unlike any other beach on the island.
The journey inland is as rewarding as the destination itself. A stop at the tree-lined gorge of Topolia introduces the dramatic limestone walls of western Crete, while a visit to the Monastery of Chrisoskalitissa offers a glimpse into living Cretan religious tradition. Tastings of local olive oil, thyme honey, and raki round out the cultural experience before a final meal at a traditional tavern in the village of Elos.
Because this is a private tour, the itinerary can be adapted to your pace, allowing more time at the beach, a longer exploration of the cave chapel, or an extended stop in any of the mountain villages along the route.
Tour Highlights
Walk through the shallow lagoon of Elafonissi to the islet, surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise water and pink coral sand.

Travel the scenic road through the gorge of Topolia, a lush, tree-lined canyon with sheer limestone walls rising 300 metres overhead.
End the day with a traditional Cretan meal at a local tavern in Elos village before returning to Rethymno.
Itinerary
Your private vehicle departs from Rethymno and heads west along the north coast road before turning south into the interior of Crete. The drive through the foothills marks a gradual transition from coastal scenery to rugged mountain terrain.
Roughly one hour and 45 minutes from Rethymno, the road enters the gorge of Topolia, where limestone walls rise to 300 metres on either side. Inside a natural cave in the cliff face sits the small chapel of Agia Sofia, accessible by a short path and home to remarkable stalactite and stalagmite formations. The adjacent canteen, Romanza, offers Cretan refreshments, and local men in traditional dress are frequently seen here. This stop lasts approximately 30 minutes.
Continuing south, the route reaches the Monastery of Chrisoskalitissa perched above the sea. According to tradition, one of the 90 steps leading to the top is a golden stair visible only to those without sin, and the monastery continues to be maintained by its resident nuns. The panoramic sea view from the monastery grounds is exceptional. Allow approximately 30 minutes for this visit.
Arriving around midday, you have ample free time to explore the beach and its lagoon. The shallow enclosed area to the right of the main beach is particularly calm and well-suited to children. A walk through the lagoon to the islet reveals the full breadth of the coastline and its distinctive pink coral sand. Swimmers, snorkellers, and windsurfers all make use of the warm, clear shallows.
Before the return drive, the group stops at a traditional tavern in the chestnut village of Elos for a Cretan meal. The menu reflects local produce and time-honoured recipes from the region.
The return journey to Rethymno takes approximately two hours and 30 minutes, bringing the total tour duration to between eight and ten hours depending on stops and pace.
