Lake Kournas is located in the Apokoronas municipality of the Chania regional unit in western Crete, Greece. Situated approximately 45 kilometres east of Chania city and 5 kilometres inland from the coastal town of Georgioupolis, it is the only natural freshwater lake on the island of Crete and serves as an important habitat for migratory and resident bird species.
