Wild Dolphin & Marine Wildlife Expedition off Portimão
A private, conservation-led journey into the Atlantic in search of wild cetaceans along the Algarve coastline.
This dolphin watching Portimão expedition sets out from the historic quayside of Cais São Francisco aboard a private vessel, guided by experienced captains, multilingual naturalists, and on-board marine biologists. The operator holds a licence from ICNF — Portugal's Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests — and every aspect of the tour is designed around responsible, low-impact wildlife observation.
The search for wild dolphins typically focuses on the rich Atlantic waters off the Algarve, where common and bottlenose dolphins are frequently encountered. With approximately a 95% sighting success rate, the crew draws on real-time knowledge of animal movements to position the boat at respectful distances in compliance with regulated encounter protocols.
Beyond cetaceans, guests can expect sightings of seabirds native to the southern Portuguese coast, interpretive commentary on species identification and behaviour, and unobstructed views of the dramatic Algarve shoreline. The private format means the experience is tailored to your group without the noise or crowding of shared departures.

How the Expedition Unfolds
Guests arrive at the boarding gate 15 minutes before departure. Free parking is available directly adjacent to the gate, and toilet facilities are located nearby.
The crew delivers a safety and conduct briefing covering open-sea conditions and responsible wildlife observation rules. The vessel departs into the Atlantic waters off the Algarve coast.
Guides and the captain actively scan the water using experience and local knowledge to locate wild dolphins. The search phase lasts approximately one hour and 45 minutes, with positions adjusted according to animal location.
Once cetaceans are located, the vessel positions at a regulated distance while the marine biologist provides interpretive commentary on species, behaviour, and conservation context. Seabirds and coastal scenery are also highlighted during this phase.
The vessel returns to Cais São Francisco, completing the approximately three-hour excursion. Private groups enjoy a complimentary bottle of champagne and snacks during or following the expedition.
