Antonio's Crystal Ice Cave Tour — Sapphire Cave on Vatnajokull Glacier
Step beneath the glacier's surface and discover a world of sculpted blue ice on one of Iceland's most celebrated outlet glaciers.
The Crystal Ice Cave tour at Vatnajokull is a guided three-hour journey into a naturally formed glacial cave, known locally as the Sapphire Cave, where layers of compressed blue ice reveal thousands of years of Iceland's frozen history. Experienced glacier guides lead small groups from the Glacier Lagoon parking lot across a dramatic landscape to a cave that reforms every summer into a unique, ever-changing structure. No two visits are ever identical, making each tour a singular encounter with one of nature's most dynamic environments.
The Sapphire Cave owes its striking blue color to the density of the glacial ice above it, which absorbs most wavelengths of light and transmits blue most strongly. Guides explain the glaciological processes at work as guests move through the cave's chambers, connecting the visual spectacle to the science behind it. This educational layer distinguishes the experience from a simple scenic walk.
Vatnajokull is Europe's largest glacier by volume, covering roughly eight percent of Iceland's total landmass, and the outlet glacier visited on this tour sits within a nationally protected landscape. The drive from the Glacier Lagoon toward the glacier crosses an ancient glacial plain, offering context for the scale of ice that once dominated this entire region. The journey to the cave is as informative as the cave itself.
Morning departures allow guests to witness the early light filtering through the cave entrance, casting a golden tone across the blue walls. Afternoon departures offer deeper, more saturated blue tones as direct light penetrates further into the ice. Both windows provide compelling photographic and experiential conditions depending on personal preference.

Tour Itinerary
Arrive at the designated meeting point in Vatnajokull National Park, located at í Hornafirði, Jökulsárlón, Glacier Lagoon, 781 Höfn. Look for the Crystal Cave Tours logo on a 4x4 vehicle in the bus parking lot near the restrooms. Plan to arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes before departure, as restroom facilities are only available at this location.
Board the guide's 4x4 vehicle and travel toward the glacier, turning onto an F-Road approximately 10 minutes into the drive. The full journey from the Glacier Lagoon to the glacier parking lot takes between 20 and 30 minutes on rough terrain. Your guide will narrate the history of the surrounding glacial landscape throughout the drive.
Upon arrival, the guide distributes all necessary equipment, including crampons, an ice axe, a harness, a helmet fitted with a headlamp, and hiking boots or waterproof gear for those who have rented them. Once everyone is equipped, the group sets off on a 30-minute hike across flat, slightly rocky ground to the cave entrance.
At the glacier's edge, a large cavern opens beneath the ice with a river running underneath, marking the entrance to the Sapphire Cave. After a safety briefing and crampon fitting if required, guests spend approximately one hour inside the cave exploring its chambers. The guide explains the cave's formation and composition as the group moves deeper into the blue ice.
After exiting the cave, the group hikes back to the glacier parking lot before a 30-minute drive returns everyone to the Glacier Lagoon. The tour concludes at the original meeting point, where guests part ways with their guide.
