Buggy Off-Road Excursion Around the Crater of Sete Cidades
Navigate volcanic terrain, twin lagoons, and Atlantic panoramas on a half-day buggy circuit unlike any other.
The Sete Cidades buggy excursion takes adventurous travelers on a guided circuit around one of the Azores' most iconic volcanic craters, combining dramatic landscapes with genuine off-road thrills. Riders follow a carefully planned route that strings together lookout points, crater-rim paths, and lakeside tracks across roughly four hours of active exploration.
Sete Cidades sits inside a dormant stratovolcano on the western tip of São Miguel Island, its twin lagoons — one blue, one green — filling the caldera floor. The elevation changes along the crater rim deliver sweeping views of both the lakes below and the open Atlantic beyond, offering a perspective that simply cannot be reached by conventional vehicle.
The route weaves through rural roads, forest tracks, and scenic belvederes, passing landmarks such as Vista do Rei and Muro das 9 Janelas before descending into the village of Sete Cidades and looping back along the lagoon shoreline. Every section of the circuit presents a different character, from exposed ridgeline driving to shaded canopy trails.
Tour Highlights
Circle the rim of the Sete Cidades volcanic crater with unobstructed views of the twin lagoons and the Atlantic coastline.
Stop at Vista do Rei, the most celebrated viewpoint on São Miguel, where the entire caldera unfolds below the observation terrace.
Navigate the legendary Muro das 9 Janelas, a historic stone wall perched on the crater edge with panoramic exposure on both sides.
Pass through the quiet lakeside village of Sete Cidades and cross the bridge spanning the Lagoa das Sete Cidades.
Experience adrenaline-filled off-road sections that put the buggy's 4x4 capability to full use on unpaved volcanic terrain.
Skirt the shores of Lagoa de Santiago on the return leg, adding a second, lesser-visited lagoon to the scenic itinerary.
Route Itinerary
The circuit begins at Valados, where the group assembles, completes pre-tour formalities, and receives a briefing. The buggies set off through the pastoral countryside past Unileite and Bom Pastor, gaining altitude toward the crater rim along Canada Goyanes.
At Pico do Carvão the route reaches one of its highest points, rewarding drivers with sweeping views across the caldera interior. Shortly after, the convoy passes the Muro das 9 Janelas, a stone wall that frames the volcanic landscape on both sides of the narrow ridge.
Vista do Rei offers the signature panorama of the tour, with the green and blue lagoons visible simultaneously from the belvedere above the crater. The buggies then descend into the village of Vila das Sete Cidades, passing through the peninsula that separates the two lagoons.
A drive through the volcanic tunnel adds a dramatic underground moment before the group emerges at the Ponte da Lagoa das Sete Cidades. The final stretch follows the edge of Lagoa de Santiago before the circuit concludes with the return to Valados.
